The best of the new Fiat 500X crossover is that it has almost nothing in common with Fiat currently languishing on dealer lots. Fiat sales fell 13 percent overall this year and June sales were 30 percent over the same month of 2014, the worst performance among all car brands. No one in the Fiat-Chrysler should be surprised. The main product of the Italian brand, the small 500, is entering its fifth year. Fiat’s first attempt at a model of four US ports more mainstream, the 500L is like salesproof as any car on the market; call home is like saying that the star of ads Fiat Abarth, fashion model Catrinel Menghia is no longer beautiful.
The 500X attempts to resolve all the shortcomings of the brand with a fresh design takes more style details Porsche Macan any of its stablemates. The 500X is attractive and distinctive and has a real back seat with a load that is great for class. The cabin is well thought out, with an information display mounted and entertainment center that comes directly from the Chrysler corporate parts box. The same applies to its propulsion system, which is shared with your partner platform, the Jeep Renegade. Both are designed in Melfi, Italy, the Fiat factory.
The 500X can be had with a manual four-cylinder and six-speed turbo 1.4-liter, but only as a front driver at the input level adjustment. A naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four mated to nine speed automatic irascible powers all other Chrysler with four-wheel drive tacking an additional $ 1,900 in price. Base models start at just $ 20.900 but a 500X runs to US $ 32,500 loaded. Our test vehicle with traction on the four wheels and 180-hp 2.4-liter, stickered for US $ 29,100. If this makes the 500X seems a bit expensive, it is symptomatic of this compact crossover class. Regardless of the brand or model, it’s easy to pay a lot for a little.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the performance and 500X is no exception. It was impressive on the test track, where their numbers were almost copies of 500L carbon. In the quarter mile, the 500X was only able to manage a 16.8-second run to 82 mph, and 0.78 g pulled unhappy in our skid pad. The latter figure was especially disappointing considering how you feel 500X tight direction and firmly riding on the street, the excess times. Braking performance was a respectable 163 feet from 70 mph, about what we see in most cars that weigh as much as 3,361 lbs 500X and are not shod with high-performance rubber.
Compared with other small utes, however, the numbers are not out of line. It’s just that we have a hard time wrapping our heads around spending $ 30,000 for a small vehicle which is not much fun to drive, especially when only 24 miles per gallon is received in mixed use. Of course, you are not buying something on this type of track days, and 500X is more successful in its primary mission of providing transportation style. But as is often the case with current products Fiat-Chrysler, the 500X has the feeling of being unfinished, because no one was really sweating the details, as far as trying to get the finished product out the door. Nowhere is this more evident than in transmission. Unlike any other vehicle we drive with this nine speed, we see the reality 500X shift to the highest gear.
But like the others, constantly going back and forth between the seventh and eighth on the road to keep situations of speed and driving dynamics that have been hunting around for the right equipment. At one point, we even found the 500X almost stagnate due to the impatience of the transmission is in a higher speed. It was found that the choice of Sport mode in 500X mode selector advance three positions and others are self traction + -cures lot of indecision. Just make sure you turn and hold the button in place to ensure that actually changes the mode setting.
Italian rarity, that euphemism for poor design and questionable quality, sometimes charming in cheaper, less 500. But this is a car that, for many of their owners, is rather a toy or a fashion statement than anything else. Here, the bar is higher, and although Fiat-Chrysler has certainly surpassed his previous efforts, there is still room for progress is made.
